ASHLAND — The Ashland City Schools Board of Education approved spending upwards of $900,000 Monday for projects at Edison Elementary School and Ashland High School.

The board approved an asbestos abatement and remodeling project at Edison for $601,100, and the next phase of the AHS locker room project for up to $310,000.

The locker room project is primarily funded by donors, Superintendent Doug Marrah said.

During Monday’s meeting, the board approved $280,000 in donations. Robert and Jan Archer gave $200,000 towards the project; David and Suzanne Steury gave $50,000; Mark Humrichouser gave $20,000; and Herb and Julie Guenther gave $10,000.

The district will seek more fundraising to cover the total cost, Marrah said. The approved $310,000 is the “guaranteed maximum price” for the next phase (3A) of the locker room project.

“Absolutely tremendous to have it be donor-based for us,” the superintendent said.

The board’s approval of more than $600,000 for Edison Elementary School will pay Massillon Construction and Supply to remove asbestos, replace the ceiling and floor where the asbestos is contained and more.

According to Marrah, early estimates projected costs of more than $800,000.

The lower bid allowed the district to add two additional projects to the larger project. The base bid to remove the asbestos and replace the ceiling and floor will cost $563,300.

The board opted to also remove and replace the gym floor for $14,800 and added re-polishing for $23,000.

Projects at the elementary and high school were both unanimously approved by the school board.
