ASHLAND — As mid-March marks the one-year mark of the first COVID-19 lockdowns in Ohio, an Ashland church is asking the community to recognize first responders by displaying blue lights in their front porch lights.

The Ashland Dickey Church of the Brethren’s campaign prompts Ashland County residents to purchase blue light bulbs and display them through the end of May.

“We were looking for an outreach project that could lift our community up during this difficult time and bring some light to the darkness,” pastor Jeff Messner said.

A.D. Church has partnered with Ashland’s Farm & Home for the sale of blue light bulbs during the campaign. With their purchase, customers will receive a free double-sided yard sign, reading “Front porch lights for our front line heroes.” Ashland residents are asked to support Farm and Home by purchasing the light bulbs there, but with a receipt, they can receive a sign at Farm and Home.

“We decided to go with blue lights to be unified, and then we thought we could also support a local business,” Messner said. “I went in, talked with them, and they were pleased to be included in on this.”

The campaign aims to recognize medical workers, first responders, firefighters and police officers.

“Why blue lights? After all, each of these different front-line hero groups already have their own symbolic colors… So, why reinvent the wheel? Let this one color — blue — unify us around one cause,” Messner said in a letter to the Ashland community.
