ASHLAND — In a surprising announcement, Arie Lipsky has stepped down as Music Director of  Ashland Symphony Orchestra.

Tom Snyder, president of Ashland Symphony Orchestra, made the announcement on Friday night in a press release. Snyder issued the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the resignation of Maestro Arie Lipsky, music director and conductor of the Ashland Symphony Orchestra. As recently as last Saturday’s board meeting we experienced the euphoria of his projected return to our podium in January, 2020. With his assurance, we fully expected resumption of his duties during this season. In communication with us (Thursday), he has indicated a reversal in his progress and submitted his resignation to Executive Director, Martha Buckner.

He wrote in part: … ‘I decided that in the best interest of the ASO, I should resign from the Music Director position. This is an extremely difficult decision, since I dedicated so much time and effort to build the Symphony to its current level…

‘With regrets and appreciation and love to all of you. Arie’

“Of course, none of us wished the agenda of the symphony, especially during our 50th Anniversary Season, to be the search for a new musical director. Whatever we might be feeling right now, we have a tradition of fine orchestra music to celebrate, a level of excellence to maintain, and a future into which we must lean. What we have to offer is in no small part the legacy of Arie’s strong musical leadership for nearly two and one-half decades. The best way to honor him is to build on the strong foundation which he and our skilled musicians have laid. Your faithfulness as patrons and supporters is a significant part of the strength of all that ASO has to offer as we look to our future.

“In the coming weeks, we will begin the process of securing a new director, establishing a committee for this purpose. The formation of this search committee will include board leadership, participation from our musicians and involvement of our patrons, donors and community members.

“We will keep you informed every step of the way. Thank you for your understanding, support and faithfulness to ASO.”

Faithfully yours,

Tom Snyder, President
