As a farmer in Ashland County, Ohio, Justin Ringler values truth and an honest, hard day’s work—simple concepts that he says take on layers of complexities when it comes to government.

Ringler lives and works on a dairy farm in Perrysville, Ohio, with his wife Molly and four children. It’s a place where the most important news of the day is the weather report and where independence comes at the cost of working every holiday and eschewing days off, even in the middle of a global pandemic.

In his photo, he stands with his father and two of his brothers in a barn as they continue a tradition begun to honor his grandfather, a man whose brief, witty sayings have molded how Ringler lives his life and makes decisions.

This audio story is part of “Ohio Values,” a collaborative project between Source Media Properties and three other news outlets across the state.

This series is intentionally not political, although you will hear some stories that involve political topics and issues. Instead, we made an intentional choice to focus on our people, sharing photographs and stories about what they value the most, whether they’re heading into a voting booth or weathering a pandemic.
