MANSFIELD -- Two north central Ohio teens are part of the Miss Ohio Outstanding Teen Scholarship Program taking place this week in Mansfield.

Shelby's Ava Nastasi, Miss North Coast Outstanding Teen, and Bellville's Baylee Shoemaker, Miss Tallawanda's Outstanding Teen, are among a field of 13 candidates in Tuesday's contest.

The Miss America Organization created the State and National Outstanding Teen Scholarship Programs to encourage positive achievement by helping to nurture and build scholastic achievements, creative accomplishments, healthy living, and community involvement of our nation’s youth.

The Miss Ohio’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Program, established in 2005, is the “Little Sister” of the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program. The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities for outstanding teen girls across Ohio who excel in their schools and communities to compete for college scholarships.

The organization raises funds for scholarships for these deserving young women according to guidelines established by the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program and the Miss America Organization.

The Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Organization works to establish community-based initiatives and mentoring programs aimed at helping the nation’s youth to build character and gain the skills necessary for success in the real world. The organization’s mentoring and community-base initiatives are available to young women between the ages of 13 and 17.

In partnership with committed adult volunteers, community, and business leaders, as well as participants from the national competition, the Miss America Organization implements programs aimed at helping young people develop strong values, leadership skills, social conscience, self worth, and conviction about their own potential.

Young women throughout Ohio who meet the age requirements and the rules for competition as established by the Miss America and Miss Ohio programs are eligible to compete in the licensed Local Outstanding Teen Scholarship Programs. The winners of these local scholarship programs will then be eligible to compete in the Miss Ohio’s Outstanding Teen Program held in June. The winner of the Miss Ohio’s Outstanding Teen Program is then eligible to compete as the state representative in the national Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Program which is held end if July of that year.
