ASHLAND — The Ashland County Commissioners approved a motion Thursday that would allow the county to begin contract negotiations with a company to provide an electronic waste recycling day.

Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, are pieces of technology that people want to get rid of like old TVs, computers, wires, and printers.

The county selected GreenBoard I.T. of Warren, Ohio as its partner for the e-waste event after fielding proposals from multiple other companies. GreenBoard I.T. was the cheapest qualified company, with an estimated total cost of $15,100, Solid Waste District Coordinator Jim Skora said.

“[GreenBoard I.T.] is very well versed, good reputation, have done collection events of similar size for solid waste districts so I feel comfortable with them,” Skora said.

The event is tentatively planned for Oct. 1 and he estimates that 20,000-30,000 pounds of material will be recycled. Advertisement for the event will likely start in September, Skora said.

The county has partnered with a number of private companies to offer recycling services after the Ashland Recycling Center, which used to accept e-waste, shut down in December 2020.

The solid waste district has another recycling event for farm tires planned for Aug. 30-31 at the Ashland County Fairgrounds. Participants have to pre-register for the event between Aug. 8-Aug. 26.
