ASHLAND -- Both the Ashland and Loudonville Public Libraries are now closed until further notice due to social distancing recommendations associated with the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
On Monday, the Ashland Public Library had announced plans to offer a window service, but in an updated notice Tuesday, the library shared intentions to close instead.
"It is with much consideration that the Ashland Public Library has decided to close all operations to the public until further notice," said Ashland Public Library's community engagement coordinator Emily King in a press release. "This decision was difficult to make as the library has always been seen as a community hub, however ,the current situation calls for action.
"The scientific evidence that early social distancing can help stop the spread of the coronavirus was a compelling factor in taking this precautionary step on behalf of our patrons, staff, and our community during this global health crisis."
The Loudonville Public Library's Board of Trustees announced plans to close until further notice following a Monday evening meeting. Its closure became effective March 16 at 9 p.m., according to its website.
"The health and well-being of our patrons, staff and community is our top priority," said library director Melissa Mallinak in a Facebook post.
To access the Loudonville library's digital content from home, users must use their library card number and pin number. Typically the pin number is the last four digits of your phone number, unless you asked for it to be set to as something different. All Loudonville-Perrysville School District students should have a 3-for-Me card giving them full access to all the digital content. The pin number for 3-for-Me cards is their graduation year. If anyone need to know their library card number or pin number, they can call 419-994-5531
While the Ashland Public Library is closed, its bookmobile and outreach services also also suspended, but digital resources will still be available at www.ashland.lib.oh.us.
The Ashland Library's book drop will be closed for the duration of its closure. Due dates will be extended and all overdue fines will be waived.
Both the Ashland and Loudonville libraries have wifi available outside the building.
The Ashland Public Library explained its wi-fi networks are APL-Guest or APL-Outdoor, and the password for both is: connected. Devices can be used from the car or on the benches outside the library. The library noted if a large number of devices are utilizing the wi-fi, the service may be limited on speed.
