DAYTON -- A pregnant Mansfield woman killed in Dayton died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, according to Tuesday's ruling by Montgomery County Coroner Kent H. Harshbarger.
Kayla Hayton, 20, was killed in the same manner as her boyfriend, Todd Burkhart, 28, according to the coroner, who said the unborn child being carried by Hayton also died, due to her injuries. She was reportedly five months pregnant.
It is not clear if the same weapon was used in their deaths. It appears the couple died around the same general time, according to the coroner.
Authorities say Hayton and Burkhart died within a block of each other on West Stewart Street in Dayton. According to police, the two traveled to Dayton seeking to buy a gun from a man Burkhart met while in prison. The two were last seen Nov. 16.
Burkhart's body was found at 900 W. Stewart St. on Friday, while Hayton was found at 910 W. Stewart St. on Monday. Both bodies were found in abandoned houses.
Dayton police said Monday afternoon that Larry Rodgers, 30, was taken into custody on a weapons charge on Saturday as the sole "person of interest" in the case. Bond was set at $100,000 for Rodgers during a court appearance on Monday.
According to a published report at WHIO-TV7, police arrested Rodgers after they obtained a search warrant for a house in the 600 block of Groveland Avenue “in relation to an ongoing homicide investigation,” court records read.
A .40 caliber handgun with an extended magazine was found in the closet of the bedroom Rodgers shared with his girlfriend, court records show. Rodgers was not allowed to have a weapon because of a previous felony burglary conviction.
Hayton had a daughter, currently being cared for by her grandmother.
