ASHLAND -- Freer Field's expanded parking lot is set to be completed within a few weeks and will feature 30 parking spaces, two of which will be designated for handicap parking.
The project launches phase one of Ashland County Park District's Freer Field makeover, which will continue into next year.
Sarver Paving is handling the expansion, which will be paved with asphalt. A portion of the paved trail at Freer Field will also have to be rerouted due to the development.
“We are partially using ODOT funds to pay for that project," said Stephanie Featheringill, Administrative Director of the Ashland County Parks District. "It’ll be about double the size that it is currently, and it’ll have 30 parking spaces.
“When there is really nice weather out, that parking lot is totally full. People have parked in the grass, which is where we’re are putting the new parking lot expansion. In the future, we will be having that Freer Field building (added) there along the woods, and part of the parking will serve that building too."
In 2021, Ashland County Parks plans to go to bid to construct a new building that includes office space, public restrooms that will be accessible to hikers, as well as an enclosed shelter and an open-air pavilion space.
The intended structure will be open from dawn until dusk and will also be utilized during special events held at Freer Field.
