BELLVILLE  -- A 70-year-old Mansfield man died Monday night in a two-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck on I-71 in Jefferson Township.

According to the Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 10:46 p.m. in Jefferson Township, closing the northbound lanes near Bellville while the crash was investigated and cleaned up near mile post 164.

Troopers said the crash occurred when a 2020 Freightliner commercial truck, driven by Robert Schull, 52, of Independence, Ky., struck a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, driven by George W. Crawford, 70, of Mansfield, from the rear while traveling in the right lane.

Schull sustained no injuries from the crash. Crawford succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the patrol. A passenger traveling with Crawford, identified as Eugene Murphy, 64, of Calumet, Ill., was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The following agencies assisted on scene; Washington, Troy and Jefferson Twp. Fire and EMS, Richland County Coroner’s Office, and Mike’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation at this time, troopers said.
