ASHLAND — Recycling is back in Ashland.

Residents have been able to drop off their recycled items in bins placed at 14 locations throughout the county for about two weeks.

The countywide program is through a five-year contract with Dover-based Kimble Recycling & Disposal Inc. With this contract, Ashland County will pay $11,447 per month, using fees collected through the solid waste management district.

The service replaces the Ashland County Recycling Center, which closed in December.

Bins will accept two different materials. One is for paper and cardboard. The other will take plastic items, glass and aluminum cans. Items not accepted will be greasy pizza boxes and plastic bags.

President of the Ashland County Commissioners, Denny Bittle, reminded people Thursday that some plastic is not recyclable.

“Like the plastic pots that plants come in, that’s not recyclable,” Bittle said. “Also, people aren’t taking their bags apart…that creates a huge issue for their automated systems.”

He reiterated the importance of not bagging items.

The company has also urged residents to clean and dry the materials before taking them out to the bins.

Kimble has agreed to transport materials one to three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, depending on the location.
