ASHLAND — Surrey Inn along Claremont Avenue has closed temporarily to allow owners to rebuild after a fire consumed at least one room on its second floor on Tuesday.
Firefighters were dispatched to the inn at 8:58 a.m. on Tuesday.
Ashland police evacuated the building as firefighters worked to isolate the fire to one room on the second floor.
“It was room 206,” Anderson said. “The fire pretty much gutted that room, pretty much consumed everything that was in that room.”
Two Ashland firefighters were hurt in the effort, Anderson said. One suffered from heat exhaustion and another received a laceration to the arm — both are OK, the chief said.
Anderson said the fire’s origin is still under investigation.
The section of Claremont Avenue between Smith Road and just north of Surrey Inn was closed to traffic from around 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Anderson said the inn closed because it only has one heating, ventilation and air condition unit.
A spokeswoman at Surrey Inn said it will be closed for at least “a couple weeks” to allow crews to rebuild room 206 and other surrounding rooms that received water and smoke damage.
O’Bryan’s Pub, a bar and restaurant attached to Surrey Inn, was not affected by the fire, other than small contamination of smoke, Anderson said. It opened to customers later Tuesday, according to the chief.
