MANSFIELD -- A 67-year-old Touby Road man died from asphyxia during a tree-cutting accident on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
An autopsy was completed Wednesday, confirming the cause of death, according to Maj. Joe Masi.
Aaron Beer of 2950 Touby Road in Washington Township was using a chainsaw to cut up a maple tree that had previously fallen on a hill. A large section of the tree root shifted and fell on him, pinning him beneath it.
According to a sheriff's department report, deputies were dispatched at 2:26 p.m. on the report of a man trapped under dirt.
"There did not appear to be anything suspicious about the situation," the report said. "The victim was home alone and was suffocated under the dirt and tree."
