Ohio State Highway Patrol car

JACKSON TOWNSHIP – A West Salem man was killed in a vehicle-pedestrian crash early Saturday morning in Ashland County, according to a press release from the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian, 30-year-old Brett Michael Lycans, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ashland County Coroner’s Office. Impairment of the pedestrian is believed to be a possible factor, the Patrol reported.

According to the press release, Lycans was in the left lane of southbound US Route 42 when he was struck by a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The driver of the Hyundai, Michael Eugene Cottrill Jr., 20, of Shelby, was not injured and remained on scene. Cottrill is not considered at fault, the Patrol reported.

U.S. Route 42 was closed for approximately three hours.

According to the Mansfield News Journal, the incident took place at approximately 4:17 a.m.

Other agencies assisting at the crash scene were: The Ashland County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
