WAYNE COUNTY -- The Wooster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on Steiner Road at Irvin Road on Friday at 2:43 p.m.
Troopers said Elizabeth J. Gasser, 89, of Creston, was southbound on Irvin Road, driving a 2017 Ford Fusion. She was wearing her safety belt at the time of the crash. Gasser did not survive the crash and was transported from the scene by the Wayne County Coroner’s Office. She had no passengers.
Austin Middelton Arters, 18, of Creston, was westbound on Sterling Road, driving a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Arters was not wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash and was transported to the Wooster Community Hospital by Canaan Township Fire and EMS. Arters was cited for not wearing his safety belt. He had no passengers.
Trooper said Gasser was southbound on Irvin Road and failed to stop for a posted stop sign at Sterling Road. She pulled into the path of Arters' vehicle. Arters struck the left front of Gasser’s vehicle causing her vehicle to rotate and come to rest in a yard. Arters' vehicle traveled off the left side of the road striking a utility pole.
On scene were Canaan Township Fire and EMS, Wayne County Coroner’s Office, Wayne-Holmes Electric, Bear’s Towing, Accelerated Towing, officers from the Wooster Post of the Ohio State Highway patrol and the Crash Reconstruction Unit of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
This crash remains under investigation and this is the first fatal crash in Wayne County for 2020.
