LOUDONVILLE: Robert Hissem Cowen passed away Sunday, September 19, 2021, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was 86.
He was born on May 12, 1935, in Loudonville to parents Patrick & Virginia (Hissem) Cowen. Bob attended Loudonville High School and was an All- Ohio Football player. He was inducted into the Ashland County and the Loudonville High School Sports Hall of Fame with the 1951 Loudonville High School undefeated football team.
In 1952, Bob went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War where he was a truck driving instructor. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
On November 18, 1955, Bob married the love of his life Lavone F. Heller. They have been married for 65 years.
In 1972 Bob and Lavone founded Cowen Truck Line in Perrysville, which has been a family-owned and operated truckload carrier for nearly 50 years. Bob was active outside of the business as a past member with the Ohio Truck Association, Loudonville Rotary, the Kettering Hospital Board, the American Legion, L-P Athletic Boosters, and the Loudonville Chamber of Commerce. Bob is a recipient of the Community Service Award from the Loudonville Chamber of Commerce. He and Lavone also attended New Hope Community Church in Loudonville.
Another passion of Bob’s was racing, in particular, late Model Dirt Track racing. He is a past champion at the Mansfield Speedway and Wayne County, Orrville Speedway. Bob was also a car owner in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He had a huge impact on many local racers and the racing community and developed a huge racing family over the years.
Bob is survived by his wife Lavone Cowen of Loudonville; his children Cindy (Dennis) Newcomer of Perrysville and Tim (Anne) Cowen of Ashland; his grandchildren Carly (Greg) Brightbill of Loudonville, Kelly (Brian) Martin of Perrysville, and Bobby (Jessica) Cowen of University Heights, Ohio; great-grandchildren Hannah and Hayden Brightbill and Jordyn and Vayda Martin; his brother Gerald (Joan) Cowen of St. Charles, Illinois; brothers-in-law Chub (Marianne) Heller, Wayne (Pat) Heller, and Randi Heller; and sister-in-law Judy (Ronny) Robbins
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
The Cowen family will receive friends Friday, September 24, 2021, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the New Hope Community Church, 637 N. Market Street, Loudonville, Ohio. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 10 a.m. following an hour prior of calling at 9 a.m. Pastor Rob Paterson will speak and burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Military honors will be performed by the Loudonville American Legion and the Perrysville VFW.
