COLUMBUS — Ohio’s two U.S. senators and the state’s attorney general have offered their respective statements in the wake of the presidential election of Democrat Joe Biden.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released a statement following Saturday’s announcement that Vice President Joe Biden has been elected the 46th President of the United States, and Senator Kamala Harris will make history as the first woman, Black, and Asian American to be elected Vice President:

โ€œPresident-Elect Joe Bidenโ€™s story is one of loss, perseverance, and strength. He is a good and wise man, and his election proves that our country is choosing truth, decency, and unity over lies and division.

“Our country needs his and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harrisโ€™s leadership now more than ever. We have work to do to address the challenges facing us: this pandemic, crippling inequality, systemic racism, climate change, and creating an economy that works for everyone.

“Biden and Harris are ready to restore hope and civility to the White House, come together to keep our democracy strong, and ensure that all work has dignity in this country.โ€

Rob Portman

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) released the following statement on efforts to ensure the integrity of the 2020 presidential election:ย

โ€œWith historic turnout across the board, itโ€™s clear that the American people were fully engaged in this election. The strong turnout for both candidates and both parties is a healthy sign for our democracy. Along with more than 71 million Americans, and a majority of Ohio voters, I supported President Trump.

โ€œRight now, former Vice President Biden is leading in enough states to win the presidency. But there are still votes being counted. In this close election, President Trump has every right to insist that all legally cast ballots are counted. He also has the right to appropriate recounts and the right to go to court to resolve any questions about irregularities. At the same time, the Trump campaign has an obligation to come forward with evidence to support any allegations of election fraud.ย

โ€œAllowing a fair and transparent process at this juncture is important to providing Americans more assurances of the integrity of the election and helping the country heal after a contentious campaign. I hope the states and the courts will move expeditiously to a resolution.โ€

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost

Meanwhile, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued the following statement regarding Ohio’s amicus brief that was filed in the case Republican Party of Pennsylvania v. Boockvar:

“This constitutional question will come up again in future elections. It is in the best interest of all Ohioans – all of America – to gain a definitive answer, regardless of politics.”

The copy of the brief is available on the attorney general’s website.
