ASHLAND — Jon Metzger’s athletic future lies on the football field, but the senior put his stamp on Ashland’s baseball program this spring.
Metzger was selected the District 9 Player of the Year in Division I when the teams were unveiled Monday afternoon. He was one of six Arrows to earn all-district honors.
Metzger was joined on the first team by Kamden Mowry. Ethan Bunce and Luke Bryant were second-team picks while Alex Grissinger and Logan Fulk were honorable mention selections.
Metzger, who will play football for Hillsdale (Mich.) College, will go down as one of the top three-sport athletes in school history. He was a first-team Division II All-Ohioan in football last fall and a three-time state qualifier in wrestling. He hit .400 with 16 runs batted in this spring as the Arrows finished 12-12 overall and 8-6 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.
Joining Metzger and Mowry on the District 9 first team were Tiffin Columbian’s Bryce Roggow and Isaiah Tilse, Fremont Ross’ Dylan Wright and Josh Ross, Norwalk’s Brayson Molson and Cooper Smith and Perrysburg’s Matt Hubbard and Jack Losee.
Other second-team picks were Tiffin Columbian’s Braylen Auble and Gavin McLane, Fremont Ross’ Alejandro Melchor and Braylon Schneider, Norwalk’s Ben Rothhar and Isaiah Wells and Perrysburg’s Matt Gast and Quinn Weber.
Tiffin Columbian’s Nick Weber was selected the District 9 Coach of the Year in Division I. The Tornadoes were 12-11 this season.
