MANSFIELD — Hillsdale’s balanced attack was too much for the Flames to handle Saturday at The Furnace.

Braylen Jarvis and Nick Kandel each scored 16 points as the Falcons pulled away in the fourth quarter for 60-46 win over host Mansfield Christian.

Seven different players cracked the scoring column for Hillsdale (2-2). Five of them scored five or more points.

“Everyone contributed. We had guys who shot the ball well and we had guys who attacked well,” Hillsdale coach Ryan Moore said. “We had really good inside-out action. I was pleased with a lot of the things we were able to do offensively.

Mansfield Christian (1-3) trailed 29-20 at the half and 37-25 late in the third before making things interesting. The Flames closed the quarter on a 6-1 run and trailed 38-31 going to the fourth.

A pair of Amarr Thomas free throws with 5:46 trimmed Hillsdale’s advantage to 40-34, but the Flames wouldn’t get any closer. The Falcons finished the game on a 20-12 run to win going away. Brayden Bartter jump-started the run for Hillsdale with a conventional three-point play to make it 43-34 with 5:41 left. Kandel took over from there, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the fourth.

“We have a good blend of athleticism and physicality,” Moore said. “In the Wayne County League you’ve got to be physical.”

Justin Zeigler scored 11 for Hillsdale. Bartter had eight and Prestyn Smith added five.

Sophomore standout Amarr Thomas paced Mansfield Christian with 23 hard-earned points. Isaac Vance was next with six.

“We’ve just got to figure out how to get more people putting the ball in the bucket,” MCS coach Cary Craner said. “When you’ve only got one guy scoring, it’s easy to beat a team like that. We’ve got the potential, but we’re not doing it right now.

“We’ll get better. We’re only four games in and we’ve got 18 more to go. We’ve just got to keep working hard.”
