ALLENDALE, Michigan -- Someone should contact the Vatican. Official confirmation is needed before a miracle is confirmed.
Still, Ashland University may have passed one on Saturday night, literally.
On the final play of the game at Allendale, Michigan, Eagles' sophomore quarterback Austin Brenner heaved a prayer into the Grand Valley State end zone that was answered when junior wide receiver Logan Bolin came down with the ball amid a bevy of defenders. That sequence of events made ESPN's national highlights (accompanied by dueling commentary from each school) and propelled AU to a stunning, 20-17 upset of the nation's ninth-ranked team.
Video of the play can be found at this link, courtesy of the Ashland University sports information department. Incredibly, the Eagles were shutout before exploding for 20 points in the final period.
Coach Lee Owens' team improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It was Grand Valley's first loss of the year. The Lakers dip to 4-1, 2-1.
Ashland returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the 96th Homecoming game at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field vs. Davenport (3-1, 1-1).
