NORWALK -- Plymouth shook fifth-ranked Norwalk St. Paul, and had the undefeated Flyers on the ropes all night, but couldn't put them away and eventually fell 24-21 in a Firelands Conference clash.
Plymouth enjoyed a 7-6 first-quarter edge, and carved out a 14-12 lead at intermission.
The Big Red Vikings, who haven't beaten St. Paul since 1994, took a 21-12 margin to the final 12 minutes, and maintained that gap with less than seven minutes showing. But St. Paul suddenly stormed back.
Will Stieber's 5-yard TD run made it 21-18 with 6:53 left. On the ensuing possession, the Big Red fumbled at their own 26. The Flyers pounced and nine plays later Stieber scored again on a 3-yard plunge at the 2:08 mark, his third touchdown of the night.
Plymouth's final drive ended at the Flyers' 33 as time expired.
Nick Cole had a 38-yard TD run for the Big Red, while Shae Sparks and quarterback Clayton Miller added a pair of 1-yard touchdown plunges.
Plymouth falls to 3-3 overall, 0-3 in the Firelands Conference. The Big Red host Mapleton (1-4, 0-2) next week.
The Flyers (6-0, 3-0) challenge Western Reserve (5-1, 2-1) next Saturday in Norwalk.
