ANDOVER -- Hillsdale enjoyed a halftime lead, but could not hang on to it in falling 18-8 at undefeated Pymatuning Valley in the Division VI, Region 21 high school football playoffs on Saturday night.
The Falcons jumped on top in the second quarter when Caden Mutchler and Ty Williams hooked up on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Williams fired a conversion pass to Cole Sinnett for an 8-0 edge with 11:18 showing in the second period. Scoring at all was impressive, as PV has pitched four shutouts this season, while allowing just 14 points through their first six games.
The fifth-seeded Lakers closed to within 8-6 on Dillon Knowles 1-yard TD blast at the 6:47 mark of the half. The conversion failed and Hillsdale owned an 8-6 lead at intermission.
Pymatuning Valley moved on top with 6:00 remaining in the third period when quarterback Tyler Bean tossed an 8-yard scoring pass to Mason Inman for a 12-8 margin.
The Lakers put the game away on Jonah Wilkerson's 1-yard touchdown plunge with 2:14 to play.
PV boasted a strong ground game, compiling 248 yards, with Wilkerson collecting 113 yards, and Bean registering 99 yards. The Lakers outgained 12th-seeded Hillsdale 321-247 in total yardage, and enjoyed a 17-15 advantage in first downs.
Mutchler completed 15-of-29 passes for 146 yards, but the Falcons couldn't establish their ground game. Brandon Reardon's 39 yards rushing topped the squad.
The 12th-seeded Falcons are now 4-4 on the season. This was the fourth straight year the program has reached the second-round of the playoffs after hammering Campbell Memorial 51-0 last week.
Pymatuning Valley improves to 7-0 and will travel to No. 4 seed Mogadore next week.
