ASHLAND -- A couple of Ashland-area youngsters had a hot hand at the free-throw line on Jan. 2, winning the North Central District of Elks Hoop Shoot at Sandusky High School.
Makaree Chapman (12-13 year old girls division) and Kingston Jenkins (10-11 year old boys division) topped the competition to advance to the state championship in Gahanna in February. Makaree nailed 6 out of 10 in the first round and 10 out of 15 in the second, to win her division by two shots. Kingston went 8 of 10 in the first and 11 of 15 in the second to advance by one shot.
This annual contest consists of 2 rounds of free throws, where each participant shoots 25 shoots total. The contest has 3 different age groups for boys and girls; 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13. The contestants first start by participating in their schools, from there, they went to the city championship, which was held on Dec. 28 at Ashland Middle School.
Sunday’s contest involved the city champions from the North Central District of Elks, which consist of 14 lodges.
If Makaree and Kingston rise above the other 5 district champions in the state of Ohio, they will advance to a regional contest, followed by the 48th national championship in Chicago.
