LUCAS — The last time Lucas played in the girls district basketball tournament, George H.W. Bush was in the Oval Office.
The sixth-seeded Cubs won their first sectional championship since 1989, upsetting No. 2 seed Norwalk St. Paul 54-40 at Norwalk High School on Saturday. Jessie Grover led Lucas with 21 points.
Lucas will play No. 3 seed South Central in the district semifinals at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Willard. South Central knocked off Danbury 51-39 in Saturday’s late game at Norwalk.
In the other district semifinal, top-seeded Buckeye Central will play No. 5 Monroeville at 8 p.m. Thursday at Willard.
Lucas wasn’t the only area girls team to spring an upset in the sectional finals. In Division II, No. 6 seed Ontario knocked off No. 4 Willard 43-41 at Monroeville on Saturday. The Warriors, who were led by All-Ohio candidate Nashail Shelby (15 points), will take on perennial district heavyweight and No. 1 seed Bellevue at 8 p.m. Thursday at Galion. Bellevue roughed up Mansfield Senior 68-24 to punch its ticket to the district semifinals.
Second-seeded 2 Norwalk, which held off upstart Madison 53-47 at Bucyrus on Saturday, will play No. 3 Upper Sandusky in the early district semifinal Thursday at Galion. Upper Sandusky beat Lexington 52-37 on Saturday.
In Division III, sixth-seeded Crestview upset fourth-seeded Edison 41-33 at Lexington on Saturday and will play No. 1 Margaretta in the Shelby district semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday.
In the Northeast Division III sectional final, No. 3 Loudonville hammered No. 6 Triway 65-43 and will take on No. 2 Orrville at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Wooster High School.
