Steve Johnson is running for Ohio's 22nd Senate District.

ASHLAND — Steve Johnson announced Monday morning his candidacy for Ohio’s 22nd Senate District, comprised of Ashland, Medina, and Richland counties, Millersburg and northwestern Holmes County.

“Putting People First is my campaign slogan, it’s the reason I’m running, it’s my promise to voters,” Johnson, a Democrat, said.

With a degree in Finance from Ohio State and 30 years experience as controller and treasurer of the largest manufacturing companies in Ashland County, Johnson said he knows what it takes to be successful and will leverage that experience to help the state do the same.

“I want to promote better education, affordable health care, good paying jobs, and lower taxes for retirees and paycheck Ohioans,” he said.

Johnson cites that Ohio’s job growth rate trailed the national average 66 consecutive months and that its household income ranking plunged from 19th to 39th in 17 years. And that Ohio fell 17 places in national education rankings and was rated worst in the country for student debt.

“The state’s lobbyist-loving legislators have mismanaged the state’s economy and failed generations of students because they’ve been representing special interests instead of the public interest,” Johnson said.

Johnson also believes that Ohio politicians, addicted to campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry and disdainful of science, have failed future generations by rejecting policies to fight climate change.

“I’m committed to helping Ohio become a better place to live, to work, and to raise a family … for all Ohioans, not just for the well-connected,” Johnson said.
