Beyond captivating audiences with their exceptional performances, the Ashland Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has found a way to engage and inspire young music enthusiasts through their vibrant and inclusive fan club.
This unique initiative, aimed at high school and college students and expanding to include 4th through 8th graders in 2023, provides an opportunity for young individuals to immerse themselves in the world of symphonic music and experience the magic behind the scenes.
Under the guidance of Martha Buckner, Executive Director since 2014, the ASO has flourished both artistically and in community engagement. The fan club, started in 2022, acts as a gateway for young music lovers to connect with the orchestra and its vibrant community.
“Our goal with the fan club is to foster a love for music in young individuals, regardless of their musical background,” Buckner said. “We want to break down any barriers and provide a welcoming environment for everyone to explore and enjoy classical music.”
The ASO Fan Club offers an array of exciting perks. Members receive a unique lanyard and tag upon registration and free tickets to ASO concerts, along with opportunities to attend pizza parties, ice cream socials, and other fun meetups throughout the year.
Additionally, they have exclusive access to merchandise and memorable experiences, such as sitting inside the orchestra during rehearsals. It’s a chance to witness firsthand the dedication and passion that goes into creating exceptional musical performances.
Simon Vance, a talented student cellist at Ashland High School and an enthusiastic member of the ASO Fan Club, has made many memories through the club.
“Being part of the fan club has been a wonderful journey. It’s opened doors to me that I didn’t even know existed. The meetups are always a blast, and the chance to sit among the musicians during rehearsals is an unbeatable experience. It truly deepens your appreciation for the music,” he said.
Vance emphasized the ASO Fan Club is not limited to musicians alone. Whether an aspiring musician, a music lover, or simply curious about the symphony, the club welcomes everyone. Attending an ASO concert is not a prerequisite; the club serves as an excellent introduction to the orchestra, showcasing the vibrant energy and diverse talent within the ensemble.
One of the most highly anticipated events of the year is the Pops in the Park concert, scheduled for Sun., July 2, at the Myers Memorial Bandshell in Ashland. This free concert, held in preparation for Fourth of July celebrations, has become a cherished tradition for the community. Vance excitedly encouraged his peers and friends to attend.
“It is a fun and lively concert that showcases the best of the Ashland Symphony. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience their music in a relaxed outdoor setting,” he said.
For high school students with an interest in local events, Vance wholeheartedly recommended joining the ASO Fan Club, even if they are not part of a band or orchestra.
“It’s a chance to connect with like-minded individuals, explore the world of classical music, and have unforgettable experiences,” he said. The ASO Fan Club has truly become a community within itself, and it’s a fantastic way to be involved in something larger than yourself.”
As the ASO Fan Club continues to evolve and grow, it remains committed to nurturing a love for music in the younger generation. Through their inclusive approach, engaging events, and unique opportunities, the club paves the way for a future where classical music thrives, and the joy of symphonic performances reaches new audiences.
