ASHLAND — Since 1984, the Ashland County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma has offered grants-in- aid to any high school senior who resides in Ashland County and is planning to pursue a career as a teacher.
Delta Kappa Gamma originated in Austin, Texas, in May 1929. Its initial purpose was to encourage women to seek a college education and become teachers at any level they desired.
Letters of the Greek alphabet were used to identify the organization’s national, state, and local chapters so others would assume it was a women’s social sorority.
Today, Delta Kappa Gamma International promotes education of all people throughout the world. The Ashland County chapter was organized on May 14, 1938, and was the second chapter established in Ohio.
This spring the local chapter awarded grants to five Ashland County seniors. Jenna Hartson, Ashland High School, and Emily Reisinger, Mapleton High School, attended the chapter’s end-of-year banquet and were personally awarded their grants.
The other three recipients are Corri Vermilya, Loudonville High School; and Emilee Dennison and Veda Dunn, Mapleton High School.
