The Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell hosts a number of events.

ASHLAND — The 75th-annual Guy C. Myers Memorial Bandshell summer concert series will return starting June 9. 

Concerts are free to spectators and are slated for every Sunday and Thursday evening in June, July and through Aug. 11.

The bandshell is located at 209 Parkside Drive, in Brookside Park. Below is a schedule of events, along with a short description of each act by the Guy C. Myers Memorial Bandshell coordinators.

Sunday, June 9: Sounds of Touch

This Motown ensemble has graced the spotlight alongside esteemed acts such as Rick Springfield, The Temptations, Lou Gramm/Foreigner, and Al Green, among others. Notably, they’ve composed songs for the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson, and showcased their talent as finalists on the NBC program “The Winner Is.”

Thursday, June 13: Brass Metropolis

This eight-piece band showcases the skill and talen reminiscent of the early days of the Chicago Transit Authority. Their performance seamlessly combines the key components that defined Chicago’s greatness, including complex vocal harmonies, an exceptional horn selection, and an impressive rhythm section.

Sunday, June 16: Ashland Area Community Concert Band

Under the guidance of Joe Lewis, the Director of Bands at Ashland University, the AACB presents a timeless Father’s Day celebration. They enchant the audience with a repertoire spanning Broadway classics, traditional marches and masterpieces tailored for concert bands. Esteemed as one of Ohio’s premier concert bands, AACB serves as a vibrant threat in the community’s cultural fabric, boasting members from Ashland and its neighboring regions.

Thursday, June 20: Disco Inferno

This renowned ensemble of performers will revive the timeless hits of the Disco era. With iconic tracks from artists like the Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor, and Boogie Nights, their music continues to captivate audiences, inspiring foot-tapping enjoyment that transcends time.

Sunday, June 23: Reflections of Elvis

Walt Sanders & the Cadillac Band offer a true tribute to Elvis through their “One Night With You” showcase, featuring numerous other beloved Elvis hits. With their exceptional talent, the band transports us back to the era when Elvis Presley was King.

Thursday, June 27: Turn to Stone

An homage to Electric Light Orchestra, this performance mirrors the instrumentation of the 1970s group, aiming to encapsulate the essence of ELO’s live shows. Authentic costumes and a live string section contribute to delivering a memorable and authentic performance.

Sunday, June 30: Ashland Symphony Orchestra

Director Michael Repper earned the prestigious 2023 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance. The “Pops in the Park Concert” is an annual event commemorating the nation’s Independence Day, held in the picturesque outdoor venue of the Guy C. Myers Memorial Bandshell. The program includes the iconic 1812 Overture, complete with live cannon fire.

Thursday, July 4: Moonlight Serenaders Big Band

In 1951, an orchestra was established in Akron, Ohio with the intention of preserving the big band sound cherished by countless service members and their families. Made up of skilled musicians and vocalists, this ensemble revives the essence of the Original Big Band era, offering a distinctive patriotic program in honor of July 4th.

Sunday, July 7: Turn it Up

A band committed to delivering the genuine sound that played a pivotal role in popularizing southern rock. Prepare for an unforgettable musical journey as they perform all the beloved Lynyrd Skynyrd classics.

Thursday, July 11: Good Shot Judy

This high-octane swing band will make you want to dance! The classic sounds of big band music are enhanced by excellent musicians and a very upbeat presentation.

Sunday, July 14: Harp Twins, with special guest The Volfgang Twins

The twin harpists have reached remarkable heights in their careers by pushing the boundaries of music with their electric and concert grand harps. Their innovative approach transcends traditional genres, culminating in a dynamic finale featuring the versatile Volfgang Twins on Viking drums.

July 15-20: Ashland Chautauqua 25th Silver Anniversary Year

Ashland’s annual Chautauqua presents beloved figures from history for its 25th Anniversary Celebration. Actor-scholars will bring to life iconic individuals at 8 p.m., preceded by opening acts at 7 p.m. Daytime workshops and special events will also take place throughout the county. The lineup of characters, in order of appearance, includes Julia Child, Joe Louis, Ethel Waters, John Dillinger and Amelia Earhart.

Sunday, July 21: Ted Yoder Band

Ted is an internationally acclaimed musician, celebrated for his pioneering and inventive techniques with the hammered dulcimer. Picture a single wooden stringed instrument capable of emulating the full spectrum of a rock band or symphony orchestra under Ted’s masterful touch.

Thursday, July 25: Soul Town

The Armstrong Family is renowned for their exceptional renditions of classic soul hits. Their journey in soul music commenced with the triumph of the Soul Brothers Six band and their iconic original track “Some Kind of Wonderful.” Today, Kevin and Glenn Armstrong, accompanied by the captivating vocals of Mary Spayd, continue to enchant audiences with their musical prowess.

Sunday, July 28: Puppy Pals Live

As seen on America’s Got Talent, a family fun action-packed show where mostly adopted and rescued dogs perform spectacular stunts and breathtaking feats. Great entertainment for all ages.

Thursday, Aug. 1: Kristine Jackson

Drawing from earthy roots, rock and blues, coupled with her distinctive guitar technique, Kristine possesses a talent that is both innovative and authentic. She has showcased her original compositions nationwide and has had the privilege of performing alongside prominent figures in the music industry, including Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy and Robert Lockwood Jr.

Sunday, Aug. 4: The Cyrkle

This distinguished American band holds the unique distinction of being managed by Brian Epstein, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee renowned for managing The Beatles. The band, christened by John Lennon himself, had the honor of opening for The Beatles during their final tour of the United States, spanning 17 cities. Among their notable hits are “Turn-Down Day” and “Red Rubber Ball.” The Cyrkle proudly boasts original members Don Dannemann and Mike Losekamp, alongside Mansfield-native Dean Kastran, who co-founded The Ohio Express.

Thursday, Aug. 8: Red Hot Chili Pipers

Excitement abounds as the 11 Scottish Bagpipers step onto the stage. Their performance blends the traditional sounds of bagpipes with a modern twist, accompanied by drums infused with a Scottish flair. This innovative fusion, known as “Bagrock,” combines traditional Scottish music with contemporary rock and pop anthems. The Pipers are a global phenomenon from Scotland appearing right here in Ashland.

Sunday, Aug. 11: Ashland Regional Ballet

Sarah Cyders, Artistic Director. As the culminating event in the concert series, ARB offers diverse performances encompassing ballet, modern dance, jazz and tap. This company delivers captivating entertainment suitable for all ages, enhancing the cultural vibrancy of the community.
