Learning to become independent starting at a young age and carrying on through adult life can be daunting, exciting and necessary. What can be a little more scary and intimidating, but still necessary is receiving help after you have been taught to be independent your whole life.
Brethren Care at Home makes this transition for its clients smooth and enjoyable, assisting where needed while still having the independence they want right in their own home.
Services extend to those residing in independent living on campus and in Ashland and the surrounding communities.
“We provide professional, individualized care plans and support in the comfort of one’s home,” Home Care Coordinator Robin Smedley said.
“From assistance with personal care, such as getting showers and planning meals, to light housekeeping and coordinating transportation to appointments, our services are tailored to meet the unique needs of each client.”

The process begins with a simple call or referral from a family member or the individual in need. A home assessment is then scheduled, where the home care team collaborates with the client and their family to create a specialized assistance routine. This flexible approach ensures the level of care provided can range from a few times a week to daily visits, depending on the client’s needs.
Donna, a current client of Brethren Care at Home, suffered a stroke in Jan. of this year. During her recovery, she stayed at the Wasen Rehabilitation Center on the BCV campus and met many aides who now help her with daily tasks that make life a little easier.
“When I returned home, I needed the aide’s help because I’m not really steady on my feet,” Donna said. “It’s very comforting to have someone coming in to check on me every day, especially since my family is not close by.”
Donna elaborated on the diverse range of assistance she receives, including help with daily activities such as showering, doing dishes, making the bed, running the sweeper, doing errands and more.
“They help me with everything,” she said. “I couldn’t get along without them.”

The flexible and comprehensive nature of Brethren Care at Home provides a valuable alternative for those who wish to remain self-sufficient in their own space safely. Aides even encourage independence while they are there, having the clients complete all the tasks they are able to do, but there to help with the things they can’t.
To maintain consistency, the same aides will be assigned to a client to help ensure the feeling of security and comfortability.
Brethren Care at Home not only touches the lives of clients, but the staff as well.
“My favorite part of my job is the friendships and relationships I’m able to build and establish with our clients and their families,” Smedley said. “It’s truly a privilege to serve and be a part of someone’s healthcare journey, knowing you’re able to make a difference to improve someone’s day and meet new people along the way.”
Brethren Care at Home not only supports maintaining independence but also provides peace of mind to families, knowing their loved ones are in good hands.
