ASHLAND — Scott and Martha Brown earned the noteworthy “Yard of the Month” at 215 Morgan Ave., Ashland for August.
The Brown home captivated Art of Gardening members who scouted yards July 26 to determine the August winners.
The Browns were presented with $50 Farm and Home Hardware gift certificates Aug, 2.
Art of Gardening members Lee Heckman, Georgia Bonecutter and Claudia Dunn also awarded the Browns a “Yard of the Month” sign to post in their winning yard.
Martha Brown gives all the credit to her husband for the yard’s landscaping. Brown’s green thumb was handed down from his dad, Howard who had a passion for flower gardening.
His dad also had a greenhouse. The inviting yard was also noticed for its attractive brown fence and stone around the beds.
Brown pointed out the boxwoods (three different variations), Snow Queen Oakleaf hydrangeas, Globe hydrangeas, hollyhocks and myrtle.
“I love boxwoods because of the texture of the plants,” Brown said.
Both Browns are retired, she from teaching and he from Spreng Smith Insurance Agency. They have resided at the Morgan Avenue address going on 40 years and are the parents of Jesse, Jacob and Elly who is expecting her first, due anytime.
A water garden with goldfish, frogs and water lilies was one of Brown’s endeavors. He maintained it for 11 years. The water garden even featured a waterfall in it.
The side yard on the right side now sports a lemon tree, a butterfly tree and hostas.
“Little birds love our fountain,” Martha. Brown said.
Also prominent are an arbor and patio area.
“We have changed it and I got it to where I like it now,” Brown said of his award-winning yard. “The back is landscaped similar to the front.”
Brown also mentioned a vegetable garden.
“The yard is completely fenced for the dog,” Brown added.
The dog, Margo, belongs to son Jacob who resides at the same address.
