Doris Leola Hintz, 102, servant of the Lord, dedicated educator, and family woman passed away on Wednesday morning, August 7, 2024 at The Inn at Ashland Woods.

She was born in Massillon, Ohio on July 13, 1922, to the late Phillip S. and Effie M. (Wayson) Flanagan.

She was married to Walter R. Russ on September 23, 1939. She later married Paul M. Hintz on August 5, 1950. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary shortly before Paul’s death in 2014.

Mrs. Hintz began her college career the year her youngest daughter entered kindergarten. She eventually earned a Master of Education degree and completed a 6th Year Program in Educational Supervision and Reading Specialty. She was employed as a Reading Specialist in Massillon City Schools and, while there, authored the school system’s first Reading Curriculum Guide. Later she worked as a Language Arts specialist in the Canton City Schools.

Doris was always active in her church and community. She was president and treasurer of several organizations in Massillon and served as state treasurer for the American Association of University Women. She proudly served on the City Planning Commission in Massillon. For several years she prepared income tax reports through AARP. She received a national award from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for outstanding community service. While in Ashland, she taped textbooks for handicapped students attending Ashland University.

Over the years she served on various church committees and was a Sunday School teacher and Church School Superintendent. One of her greatest pleasures was having a new library at First United Church of Massillon named The Doris Hintz Children’s Library. At Christ United Methodist Church in Ashland, she served as chairman of Caring Ministries for the Elderly and Homebound. At that church she established a permanent, annual scholarship to be awarded to a college student planning to serve in Christian ministry. She was active in Christian aid ministry. Doris was Mid-Ohio District treasurer of United Methodist Church Women. Through Trinity Lutheran Church, she funded three young Ethiopian women for 3 years of study. She frequently contributed to various local charitable services.

Doris enjoyed bowling and served as Massillon City Women’s Bowling secretary for a term. She won city championships for singles, doubles, and team events. After giving up bowling, euchre was her game of choice. More than a few friends and family members were embarrassed after being soundly defeated by a petite, 90-plus-year old, white-haired lady.

She is survived by four daughters: Joan Allman, of Lebanon, Tennessee, Barbara (Carl) Renneker of Ashland, Nancy (Keith) Ames of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Virgina (Gene Kulp) Russo of Richfield, Ohio; grandchildren: Lisa (Eddie) Kirkus of Lebanon, Tennessee, Maureen (Victor) Borelli of Key West, Florida, Biagio Russ of Cleveland, Ohio, Justine (Jesse) Fyffe of Chillicothe, Ohio, Stefanie Russo of Cleveland, Ohio, Matthew (Michaela) Ames of Thornville, Ohio; Grandson-In-Law, Tinothy Goodrich of Phoenix, Arizona; along with 9 great-grandchildren; 6 second great-grandchildren; 1 third great-grandson; as well as several nieces and nephews.
