ASHLAND — Logan Frazer, a senior at Ashland High School, joined the top 1% of PSAT test-takers this week, earning a semifinalist spot in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

According to the National Merit Scholarship website, around 1.3 million students take the test each year. Only 16,000 of those achieve semifinalist honors, which is based on their test scores. In March, 710 students receive Special Scholarships, while another 6,870 are named Merit Scholarship winners.

Frazer said he took the test his junior year and was proud of how well he did.

The senior is a member of Ashland High’s marching band, jazz band and symphonic band. A press release from the school also stated he participates in Math League Team and National Honor Society. The press release also stated he volunteers with Ashland Special Needs Ministry and as a member of Ashland Grace Worship Team.

Frazer also said he participates in Academic Challenge, which has allowed him to “learn a little bit more about pretty much everything.”

When Frazer took the test last year, he said he didn’t do much studying for it. Instead, he said he drew on his years of schooling in Ashland City Schools to propel his strong performance.

“It’s somewhat of a large responsibility,” Frazer said. “So I take that on knowing I should do my best, and I will be very glad if I’m able to win a scholarship. I’m very thankful for the opportunity. Just being able to take the test and get into the running is very cool.”

Frazer hopes to attend college. His top choices at the moment, he said, are Grove City College and Case Western Reserve University. His favorite school subject is math, and the senior said he hopes to study mechanical engineering.

Frazer should find out whether he earns a spot as a National Merit Scholar in the spring. He said his next step will be completing the finalist scholarship application.
