SHELBY — The Shelby Board of Education building is getting a new roof.
Board members met Thursday evening at Shelby High School for a special meeting to approve a bid on the roof replacement project.
Ashland-based Simonson Construction was awarded the project, submitting the lowest of five bids received and opened Feb. 14.
Simonson bid a total cost of $1,208,571, which includes its base bid price of $1,076,943 and first alternate bid for the gymnasium roof, which was submitted at $131,628.
Beth Lykins, Shelby City Schools treasurer, said the two-month project is estimated to begin June 1 and completed by Aug. 1.
Monies from the district’s permanent improvement funds and capital improvement fund will be used to pay for the work, the treasurer said.
The four lowest bids received were all within the project’s $1.5 million budget. The remaining bidder was within the 20-percent allowance over the engineering budget, according to a letter from Scott Snyder, principal of RoofTEC.
RoofTEC is a professional roof and building exterior consulting firm out of Willoughby.
Other bids for the project were submitted by Revere Roofing out of Fredericktown, Freedom RWS Roofing out of Woodville, Meade Construction out of Lexington and Akron-based JB Roofing.

New roof a priority
Lykins said the entire roof of the board’s building, located at 109 W. Smiley Ave., will be replaced by the end of the project.
Scott Rose, Shelby Board of Education president, said in January that replacing the aging roof was a top project for the district to tackle.
Along with serving as the district’s board office, several activities still take place at the former high school building, including middle school athletics and gym classes, as well as band, choir and VoAg.
“Almost every room is still used,” Lykins said. “Since I got here in 2020, and probably before that, it’s (roof) been on the list to get done.”
The district’s school-based health center, opened in December 2023 by Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is also housed inside the West Smiley Avenue building.
Available services at the center include wellness checks, immunizations and blood work, as well as sports and work permit physicals. Additional health services include yearly checkups and treatment of asthma, ADHD, and more.
