NANKIN — The Mapleton FFA Chapter is proud to recognize the hard work and dedication of its Floriculture Career Development Event (CDE) team, who recently wrapped up their first competitive season with a strong showing at the State FFA Contest on April 7, earning 29th place overall.

This year marked the first time Mapleton has fielded a Floriculture team, and the group wasted no time digging in.

Team members Cheyenne Jackson, Gabriella Bertaud, Izabella Harris, and Emilee Stolcals dedicated themselves to weekly practices starting in February, working closely under the guidance of Coach Julie Stolcals.

Beyond after-school practices, the team took their training to the next level by partnering with SunnyCrest Greenhouse, a local business that provided real-world insight into industry standards.

From identifying plant species to mastering floral design techniques and pest management strategies, the students immersed themselves in the many facets of floriculture.

The team’s journey began at the District-level contest hosted by Ashland FFA in March, where they gained valuable experience and feedback. The season culminated at the State FFA Contest, where they competed against seasoned teams from across Ohio.

“Even though this was their first year, the amount of growth these students have shown is
incredible,” said FFA Advisor, Ashley Sherman.

“They were committed every step of the way, and the skills they’ve learned go far beyond the classroom.”

From teamwork and time management to technical knowledge and professional etiquette, the students have gained a strong foundation in horticulture that they’ll carry forward in future endeavors.

With roots firmly planted, Mapleton’s Floriculture Team is looking forward to blooming even brighter in years to come.
