About the event:
During the worst economic time of our history, Frances Perkins, as Secretary of Labor, helped create the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The purpose was to create jobs for people devastated by The Great Depression. Many types of jobs were created, but the Federal Art Project itself hired 1,000s of artists to create paintings, sculptures, and most famously, murals. In this workshop participants will look at some of the art produced through the Federal Art Project. They will discuss the story of The Great Depression as it is shown in the art. Then, they will create their own art, reflecting what they have learned. This workshop is led by scholar Deleasa Randall-Griffiths who will be portraying Frances Perkins on July 16.
The workshop will be held at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 527 E. Liberty Street, Ashland.
Ashland Chautauqua’s 5-day Breaking Barriers event runs from July 15-19, 2025 with daytime workshops at various locations and living history performances each evening at Myers Memorial Band Shell at Brookside Park, Ashland. All events are free and open to the public. All event locations are accessible and sensory-friendly.
