MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau is thrilled to announce the launch of the inaugural Knox County Biketoberfest (KCBO).

A new event presented by Outdoor Pursuits, a Columbus-based non-profit, Knox County Biktoberfest will be hosted at Ariel-Foundation Park, Oct. 3 to 5.

Cyclists and trail users of all skill levels are invited to Ariel-Foundation Park to experience a weekend celebrating cycling, community, and the breathtaking beauty of Knox County’s fall foliage.

Founded in 1937, Outdoor Pursuits is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization devoted to providing inclusive opportunities for outdoor recreation and adventure.

Best known for their bicycle mega-tours such as, The Tour of the Scioto River Valley (since 1962), The Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (since 1989), and The Across Ohio Bicycle Adventure (since 1998).

“The opportunities we’ve created for cyclists to tour and explore all of Ohio is such an exciting part of our work,” said Outdoor Pursuits Executive Director, Jeff Stephens. “We’ve hosted rides across the state, but this new event [in Knox County] is something we are really excited for.

“Many of our cyclists and community members have been riding [in Knox County] for years, love the beautiful trails and are really looking forward to seeing a large cycling event come to the heart of Ohio.”

Knox County Biketoberfest (KCBO) aims to support the Outdoor Pursuits Bicycle Development Fund, which has contributed over $1 million to bicycle infrastructure and advocacy across Ohio.

KCBO will offer a wide range of cycling options designed to appeal to everyone, from families to seasoned road warriors.

Participants can choose between traditional road routes and scenic rides along the famous Ohio to Erie Trail, with options to explore the Kokosing Gap Trail and the Heart of Ohio Trail.

More challenging routes are also available for experienced riders, including the legendary Knox County Bicycle Challenge through Amish country.

During the weekend, participants can also choose from two memorial rides. A ride honoring one of Knox County’s most prominent inventors, entrepreneurs and community stewards, James “Jim” P. Buchwald, will explore the Kokosing Gap Trail from Mount Vernon northeast through to Glenmont.

“Choosing to honor Jim during this event felt right,” said Ohio to Erie Trail President and Knox County native, Tom Bilcze. “Jim loved cycling the trails, supporting efforts in local development, and we know he’d love to see such a large group of cyclists celebrating in Knox County.”

Founder of Ariel Corporation, Jim Buchwald, is remembered for his honor, integrity and unwavering care for his community.

The festival atmosphere extends beyond the cycling routes. “We are incredibly excited to welcome this new festival to our community,” said Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau Marketing Manager, Olivia Toth. “Knox County Biketoberfest is a perfect way to showcase the stunning scenery and exceptional trail systems we have to offer.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for visitors to explore our charming trail towns, enjoy our local businesses, and experience our vast green spaces.”

Downtown Mount Vernon will be a hub of activity, with participants having easy access to two community festivals happening the same weekend: the Johnny Appleseed Fall Festival on Friday night (presented by Experience Mount Vernon) and the Knox Foodies Food Truck Festival on Sunday afternoon (presented by Knox Foodies).

Registration for the event is now open. Cyclists and trail users of all levels are encouraged to sign-up for a weekend of cycling and celebration.
