NANKIN — Mapleton Local Schools received an overall rating of four out of five stars on its 2024-25 Ohio School Report Card, which marks a one-star improvement from last year.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce released the state’s school report cards Monday, which assess school districts’ achievements from the 2024-25 school year.

All Ashland County schools that received typical report cards achieved overall district scores of four, meaning they exceeded state expectations for performance.

More than 90% of all Ohio districts earned overall ratings of three stars or higher, according to an Ohio Department of Education and Workforce press release.

The 2025 scores include a new rating for the college, career, workforce, and military readiness component, which measures how well the graduating class is prepared to go on to postsecondary education, enter the workforce or join the armed forces, according to the press release.

The other five categories are achievement, progress, gap closing, graduation and early literacy. The achievement, progress and gap closing scores rely on standardized test scores

The school district saw one-star increase in achievement and a two-star increase in progress and gap closing from the 2023-24 school year scores.

“The most significant highlight is in gap closing, where we rose from two to four stars. This measure reflects growth in equality across student subgroups, including students with disabilities and those who are economically disadvantaged. This jump shows that more of our students, regardless of background, are meeting success,” Mapleton High School Principal Corey Kline said in an email.

“Over the past several years, we have been intentional in developing our curriculum and assessment structures to better support student learning,” Mapleton Elementary School Principal Cassie Swanson said in an email.

“Our teachers have also completed extensive literacy training to strengthen instruction and better serve our youngest learners. In addition, we continue to build capacity through partnerships with organizations such as Ashland University, which provide tutoring and additional supports for our students,” Swanson said.

Mapleton Schools showed the highest chronic absenteeism rate at 24.9% for the 735 enrolled students, which is similar to the state average of 25.1%.

That rate breaks down to

  • 19.6% at Mapleton Elementary School
  • 28.4% at Mapleton Middle School
  • 31% at Mapleton High School

Overall, chronic absenteeism is declining: 2025 marks the lowest chronic absenteeism rate since before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release.
