ASHLAND — Ageism Awareness Day is Thursday, Oct. 9, a day meant for promoting awareness and providing education about ageism (e.g., refer to website for American Society on Aging).
“Ageism refers to the stereotypes (how we think) prejudices (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) toward others based on age.”
Ageism can also be internalized. Notably, ageism affects all adult age groups, not only older adults, and is pervasive in our society.
Mayor Matt Miller has issued a proclamation about AGEISM AWARENESS DAY in Ashland.
The proclamation is especially noteworthy and forward-thinking in addressing ageism toward both younger and older adults. Notably, it acknowledges that – in effect –words and language matter in how we refer to both age groups.
Information provided by Diana Spore, Member of the Older Adult Behavioral Health Coalition of Ashland County (OABHC), who is a social gerontologist and older adult. Signed proclamation has been provided to the office of the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Ashland County, which facilitates and coordinates the OABHC.
