JEROMESVILLE — Hillsdale Local Schools hosted an annual veterans assembly and breakfast to honor local veterans on Friday morning.
A 20-year-plus tradition at Hillsdale, the assembly included performances from the high school band and choir and a speech from keynote speaker Jeremy Brant.
Brant is Hillsdale’s information technology specialist and a 2002 Mapleton High School graduate. He served as a satellite network coordinator with the U.S. Army from 2005-2010.
He told the audience of veterans and students that his role involved ensuring all satellite links were connected in all branches of the military, including the President’s communication while traveling in the Pacific region.
Protecting future generations
“It took me a long time to realize that my military service was important. It took me a long time to realize that my job was needed even though I was never deployed,” Brant said.
“If I was called up again to protect the nation, and especially protect the youth, I would absolutely do it 100 times over. Protecting our future generations is paramount in keeping the country alive,” he said.
After his speech, the choir performed the Armed Forces Medley. Following seventh through 12th grade principal Tim Keib’s sentiments, the choir sang “We Honor You.”
Hillsdale staff served the veterans a complimentary breakfast after the ceremony.
“It’s a big part of our culture here. This and graduation are the two ceremonies that we put the most time and energy and prep and scrutiny,” Keib said.
