ASHLAND — Four Ashland City Schools students were honored by county commissioners and dog shelter officials Thursday after a coloring contest aimed at community engagement.

The elementary school students received $15 gift cards to Dominoes and Dairy Queen and earned a photo opportunity with elected officials on the Snow Day.

Their artwork will be displayed in the Ashland County Board of Commissioners office through December. In the New Year, the dog shelter will hang the pictures in its halls.

Shannon Hamilton, the shelter’s manager, said he hopes to make the coloring contest a regular event and wants to increase community engagement efforts in general.

He and Ashland County Sheriff’s Office deputy Curtis Hall teamed up for the community engagement idea.

“We wanted to take as much of the shelter to the schools and get them involved in something,” Hall said.

Earlier in November, Hamilton visited one of the district’s elementary schools with Opal, a Pitbull mix, to meet the students and introduce them with the coloring contest.

A panel of judges from the school selected four winners earlier this month.

Winners

Judges from the Ashland City Schools District chose four winners. Two of them were present during Thursday’s commissioner meeting and only one’s parents chose to disclose last names.
