LOUDONVILLE — Live ice carving, the annual model train show, a snowmobile showcase and more return to Mohican Winterfest on Jan. 10.
The annual, three-day long event has offered family-fun activities for all ages over the past 20 years.
“In December, there’s already a bunch of Christmas things going on, and January is usually kind of dead,” said Loudonville-Mohican Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Valerie Spreng.
Elegant Ice Creations is the Cleveland-based ice sculpting group that travels to Loudonville to perform live ice carvings all day.
The ice sculptors will create and display 30 ice sculptures for the event, which in years past has included figures such as Olaf from Frozen.
However, forecasted weekend rain may make the displays short-lived.
“The rain is what hurts the sculptures the most,” Spreng said.
Weekend temperatures also look warmer than previous weeks, with a predicted high of 53 degrees on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
However, visitors can stay dry inside the Loudonville Fair Board’s building, located at 65 North Water St., to see the annual model train expo.
The expo was started by Dave Sheaffer, who passed away in 2017. Lyle Gray, a fellow model train enthusiast, took it over. Gray died last spring, and he passed the torch to his son, Doug Gray.
“It’s not going to happen if I don’t do it,” Doug Gray said.
So he organized the display this year.
There will be more than 15 model trains, ranging from larger O-gauge trains, which are similar to trains seen in movies that ride around Christmas trees, and smaller N-gauge trains.
“Who doesn’t love watching trains run around the track?” Doug Gray asked.
His 12-year-old son, who grew up attending the event each year, will run his grandfather’s train in his memory, along with the other people coming to display their model train set ups.
