Martha Ann Freytag, 92, of Ashland, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 in the Good Shepherd Skill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her daughters by her side.
She was born July 28, 1933 at her home in Jelloway, Ohio (Knox County) to the late Herschel and Savilla (Workman) Richert. She was the third of four children, all of whom have preceded her in death.
She married Richard Currens in 1951, divorced in 1975. They had
three daughters: Sue (Bob) Hutson of Redmond, Oregon; Nancy Houston and Betsy (Doug) Gray, both of Ashland. She felt very blessed with eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She grew up attending and actively participating in the North Bend Church of the Brethren, Danville, OH for the first 35 years of her life. During those years she was a very active farm wife raising thousands of turkeys primarily, but also had crops, cattle and finally ducks. She was a very accomplished seamstress making the majority of her daughters clothing and being a 4-H advisor. The family moved to Ashland, OH in 1968 and were then active in the Ashland City Church of the Brethren for the next 40 years. For the last decade or more of her life, she was a member of the Ashland Dickey Church of the Brethren.
Martha was employed as a sales person by the Gilbert Furniture Company for 30 years. It was there that she met her second husband: Frank Freytag. They were married in 1988 and she gained three more daughters: Monta Donaldson, Mona (Dale) Campbell, both of Ashland and Rhonda (Jack) Neese of Sandusky, OH, as well as more grandchildren and great grandchildren. There is a great grandson with whom she had a special bond. Frank preceded her in death in 2003. In addition to Frank, an infant son Rodney and siblings, she felt the loss of two sons-in-law: Dave Houston and Ken Donaldson.
Martha’s family and her faith were her priorities and sustaining forces throughout her life. She was looking forward to meeting her Lord and hearing Him say “Well done my good and faithful servant” Matthew 25:21.
