COLUMBUS — Sadie Walter doubled up Sunday in Columbus.
The Ashland junior took state runner-up honors in the 100 meter hurdles, then placed fourth in the 300 hurdles on the final day of the Division II state meet at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Walter broke her own school in the 100s, finishing in 14.52 seconds. Painesville Riverside’s Allison Urbas won in 14.21.
About an hour later, Walter ran a 44.16 in the first heat of the 300s. The event was reseeded and run as a two-heat timed final after storms forced the postponement of the Division II preliminaries Saturday afternoon.
“I expected the people around me to push me, so I’m glad I could go out there and PR with that pressure,” Walter said before collecting her state runner-up medal in the 100s. “If I’m going to get a PR, this is the place to do it.”
So which event does she prefer?
“The 100s, for sure,” she said. “I have a love-hate relationship with the 300s.”
Walter was making her first state tournament appearance after an injury-riddled sophomore year.
“This experience is crazy, but it is a privilege for sure,” Walter said. “I’m very grateful to compete with the best in Ohio.
“I’m excited to see what next year brings.”
Podium Finish
Ashland’s Greyson Blough exceeded his own expectations.
The junior finished a surprising fourth in the shot put competition with a personal-best throw of 58 feet, 5,25 inches.
He topped his previous PR by a whopping three feet.
“It’s the environment. I love it here,” said Blough, who was making his first state meet appearance. “This is my kind of weather even though it’s very hot and the competition is the best I’ve ever faced.
“Going in we knew there was a chance five guys could throw over 60 feet.”
Blough punched hit ticket to the finals with a throw of 57.5.5 on his third attempt. He went almost a foot further with is second throw of the finals.
“This experience was great,” Blough said.

Donatini placed ninth in the 300 hurdles in 39.36.
Burns finished 13th in the long jump with a leap of 16-8.25.
