About the event:
Before the sophisticated games of today, children challenged each other with skill games, chase games, strategy games. They jumped rope, sang songs, did counting rhymes, and rhythm chants. We’ll explore the games children played when they had time to play out West. Children still play many of those games today. We’ll play as many of the games as possible – indoor, outdoor, quiet, or loud games for small and large groups as space allows. This workshop is led by scholar Becky Stone who will be portraying Mary Fields on July 23.
The workshop will be held at the Ashland Public Library, 224 Claremont Avenue, Ashland.
Ashland Chautauqua’s 5-day America’s Stories event, in celebration of America 250, runs from July 21-25, 2026 with daytime workshops at various locations in Ashland County and living history performances each evening at Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell at Brookside Park, Ashland. All events are free, open to the public, accessible and sensory-friendly.
