WESTERVILLE — A good night’s sleep was all Crestview’s Ross Kuhn needed.
Kuhn struck gold in the 800 meter run Saturday afternoon at the Division III state track and field tournament, winning the event in 1 minute, 53.98 seconds at sun-soaked Jim McCann Stadium.
He wasn’t the only local athlete to reach the top of the state podium on the state meet’s final day. Mansfield St. Peter’s Donavon Duncan won the 110 hurdles, breaking the tape in 14.55.
A senior, Kuhn anchored Crestview’s 4×800 relay team to a runner-up finish Friday. He collapsed to the track after crossing the finish line and needed the help of his teammates to reach the podium.
“Whatever my team needs is what I have left in the tank,” Kuhn said Friday when asked if he would have anything left for Saturday’s race. “I’ll give it everything I have.”
Duncan not only won the 110 hurdles. The senior placed third in the 300 hurdles in 40.76.
Crestview, which sent a contingent of nine boys athletes to the state meet, finished with 24 points. The Cougars were fifth in the final team standings.
Tanner Moore placed eighth in the 100 in 11.49 for the Cougars, while Chase Shifflet was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 41.02. Crestview’s 4×200 relay team of Adison Reymer, Evan Hamilton, Rashaun Barber and Moore also placed eighth in 1:32.28. Gabe Smedley joined Kuhn in the 800, placing 16th in 2:01.81.
Loudonville’s Catlyn Kauffman was 12th in the 800 in 2:24.72. Crestview’s Morgan Welch was 15th in the 1,600 in 5:23.79.
In Division I, Ashland’s Dylan Hickey also raced to 16th place in the 1,600. Hickey crossed the finish line in 4:21.62.
