MADISON TOWNSHIP – Four student-athletes and coaches from Madison High School are unharmed after their van was struck by a single bullet on the way to a state wrestling tournament.
Supt. Rob Peterson issued a statement Friday afternoon alerting the community that a Madison Local School District van had been struck while passing the scene of a shooter-involved incident in Columbus.
According to Peterson, a single shot was fired at the van. The bullet bounced off the vehicle after striking it at an angle.
Peterson later told Richland Source that the vehicle sustained minimal damage to the windshield.
After reporting the incident to the Columbus City Police Department, the coaches and athletes proceeded to arrive safely to their destination.
“I want to applaud our coaches for their handling of this incident,” Peterson said. “We are very thankful for the safe arrival of our coaches and student-athletes.”
Peterson said he was unaware of the exact time of the incident, but that it occurred near the I-71 and Gemini Place interchange.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that an active shooter was standing on I-71 northbound firing at vehicles Friday morning shortly before 10 a.m. According to the Dispatch, the shooter was a young man or older teen and struck at least three vehicles before being shot by Columbus police.
