ASHLAND — No one filed to challenge incumbent races in Ashland for the upcoming primary season, according to unofficial information from the Ashland County Board of Elections.
“We’ll have to wait until the write-in deadline, Feb. 21, to determine if we will be holding a primary or special election,” said Shannon Johnson, the BOE’s director.
If there is no primary, there will be no election in the City of Ashland, Johnson said.
However, there are some township and school issues, outside the city limits. Johnson said there are 10,875 people registered to vote for those issues, or about 31% of voters across the county.
Johnson said she has never seen someone file as a write-in candidate to force a primary in Ashland County.
The board will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 to certify the list of candidates and issues. Below are the candidates and issues:

• Vermillion Township, precinct 1 and 2: Replacement tax levy, 0.3 mill, for fire protection and emergency medical services.
• Hillsdale Local School District, part of Lake Township, part of Mifflin Township, Jeromesville Village, Mohican Township, part of Montgomery Township #1, part of Perry Township, Vermillion Township #1 and #2: 1.25% income tax for current expenses.
• Mapleton Local School District, part of Clear Creek Township, part of Jackson Township #1 and #2, part of Orange Township #1 and #2, part of Perry Township, part of Ruggles Township and Troy Township: 0.75% income tax for current expenses.
• West Holmes Local School District, part of Lake Township: renewal tax levy, 2.5 mills, for permanent improvements.
• Polk-Jackson-Perry Joint Fire District, Jackson Township #1, part of Perry Township: renewal tax levy, 1.9 mills, for payment of permanent and part-time firefighters.
