Whether you own a retail shop, a warehouse, or an accounting firm, appearance matters.
Even if you employ a cleaning service, there may be at least five places in your business you’re neglecting to clean.
Behind things
When was the last time you moved your copier to look behind it?
Ditto for the break room refrigerator, shelving and credenzas, and behind the vending machines.
Pull these pieces away from the wall and take some time cleaning behind them.
On top of things
When something is out of sight, it tends to stay out of mind.
But light fixtures, the tops of tall cabinets or shelves, ceiling fan blades, and even the tops of picture frames gather dust and grime you might not see until it starts drifting down and landing on your design table or laptop.
Inside things
The inside of a microwave is an obvious target for cleaning, but so is the inside of a file cabinet and desk drawers.
And the insides of equipment for manufacturing and metal fabrication businesses that use large machinery might need refreshed lubricants or maintenance that includes dismantling moving parts and thoroughly cleaning them. This will increase the efficiency and quality of work.
Underneath things
When you move that fridge or copy machine, pull it out far enough to see what’s fallen underneath it. If you haven’t done this for years, be prepared for a shock.
You’ll find more than dust bunnies under there—everything from ossified candy to evidence of a pest infestation may lurk beneath your furniture and equipment.
Right in front of you
Everyone got pretty maniacal about sanitizing doorknobs, light switches, and cabinet handles during the first few years of the 2020s. But what about computer keyboards and screens?
If you have adopted the bad habit of eating at your desk, your laptop has likely absorbed more crumbs and sugar or salt crystals than it can reasonably tolerate.
Regularly cleaning your everyday office equipment, from your computer’s mouse to your phone, will result in a healthier and more pleasant work environment.
Add walls, plants, vents, and ceiling tiles to your cleaning list of things that are right in front of you. These areas can all gather dust or grime, and ceiling tiles are prone to discoloration that makes your building look leaky and old.
Your cleaning service should offer a periodic “deep clean” that will include most of these five places in your business you’re neglecting to clean. If you do your own cleaning, set up a rotating schedule to do one thing at a time so that you don’t feel overwhelmed trying to do it all at once.
