ONTARIO — Brie Trumpower may not have been thrilled with her sectional times, but Ontario’s freestyle ace finds herself in a good place going into this week’s Northwest District swimming and diving championships at Bowling Green State University’s Cooper Pool.
A junior, Trumpower is the top seed in the 100-yard freestyle (54.42) and the No. 2 seed in the 200 freestyle (2:00.66).
Additionally, Ontario has the top seed times in both the 200 free relay (1:41.81) and 400 free relay (3:45.78). Trumpower is joined on both relays by seniors Shelby Keever, Tiffany Whittaker and Ava Ruhe.
“They were not my time goals for either (individual) race,” Trumpower said after Saturday’s sectional meet at Malabar. “I think I’m where I need to be physically. Those aren’t the times I wanted to go, but I’m not worried about it and my coach isn’t worried about it. Once I taper and rest a little bit, I think I’ll be fine.”
Like Trumpower, Shelby’s Reyna Hoffman is sitting in the catbird seat ahead of the district meet, which begins Tuesday and concludes Saturday. Hoffman is the top seed in the 200 individual medley (2:16.18) and the No. 2 seed in the 100 backstroke (1:00.23).
“I wanted my IM to be a little bit faster today, but honestly I’m happy with how I swam,” Hoffman said Saturday.
Hoffman’s teammate, freshman Emma Montgomery, is the top seed in the 500 freestyle. Montgomery won the Malabar sectional in 5:27.37.
“Emma Montgomery is amazing,” Hoffman said. “She works super-hard in practice and is always pushing me. She has a bright future for sure.”
Lexington’s Jacob Hathaway is the No. 1 seed in the 100 backstroke and a part of two top-seeded relay teams. Hathaway set the Malabar pool record in the 100 backstroke (53.3) and helped the 200 medley relay team and the 400 free relay team set pool records Saturday. The 200 team of Hathaway, Ivan Prykhodko, Tanner Holmes and Lucas Starling won in 1:40.09. The 400 team of Starling, Holmes, Isaac McFadden and Hathaway finished in 3:21.06.
“Today I saw a lot of promising things,” Hathaway said Saturday. “We have lots of solid swimmers.”
Ashland’s Rylan McDaniel is the top seed in both the 100 breaststroke (57.67) and the 200 individual medley (2:02.79). The Ashland boys competed at the split Fremont sectional over the weekend.
