ASHLAND — Ashland City Council is seeking bids for an environmental study of the former Eagle gas station that has sat vacant along Claremont Avenue for years.
The abandoned gas station at 602 Claremont Ave. received a $250,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development in July 2021, but demolition has been delayed because of environmental studies that needed to happen at the site, said Ashland Mayor Matt Miller.
“A lot of the reason it took so long to get to this point is because it had so many liens on that property,” he said. “At one point there was like, $23 million in liens against that property because it was part of a bigger operation that had long ago gone defunct.”
The city’s estimate for the project is $150,000, according to council’s ordinance that passed unanimously.
The former gas station is owned by the city, a transaction that happened in December 2019, according to property records.
The plan for the site is for it to be reseeded with grass and marketed for redevelopment, Miller said.
